Jody Wisternoff Intensified December

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

I know I keep posting up links to Jody Wisternoff mixes, but it’s because they’re so darn good.

Intensified December is particularly awesome. I love the way Jody blends deep, progressive, tech house, and even a bit of techno so well.

Thomas Gold – Agora – Size records

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Agora has the single minded simplicity of a late 90′s tech house track but with bang up to date 2010 progressive house production. Thomas Gold has done a cracking job.

A well built intro phrase gives way to one, very simple, building break down. No frippery with a little intro break down in the first quarter of the track; no just a stonking break in the middle, like in the olden days.

Mark Knight/D. Ramirez & Underworld – ‘Downpipe’ (Toolroom)

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

I’ve always been huge underworld fan, espeically the lyrics of Karl Hyde. I’ve heard some people put Karl’s lyrics in the same bracket of those of Faithless vocalist Maxi Jazz. This is criticism too far for me. I’ve always found Hyde’s lyrics to be haunting and his energy on stage was unquestionable. Maxi Jazz on the other hand is a just a bad rapper in my view, and with the exception of a few tracks I’m not really a fan although Faithless have knocked out some great tunes.

I’m characteristically behind the curve wriitng about ‘Downpipe’ several months after release, but it’s a been real grower for me. It’s at the techier end of tech house for me, and it wasn’t until I got mixing the track that I really decided I liked it.

If you’d like the words, here are the downpipe lyrics

Way Out West – Only love – Armada Music

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

This great track from the excellent Way Out West has been out for a while now and it’s the first single on the We Love Machine Album to get a release.  The Album came out on the 5th of October and it’s yet to make the album chart though I hope it will.

I was lucky enough to see Nick Warren play this tune at The Gallery MOS, and there’s a cool video of the event too courtesy of Internet DJ.

The tune has a really great warm housey feel to it. Lovely cowbell type sounds, great string snaps and a cute vocal. I’d heard the tune several times before it really grew on me. As you’d expect from Way Out West the production’s as tight as can be and there are no un-necessary elements, everything in there adds to the track.

I think Only Love is a great mid set house or progressive candidate and it sure rocked the MOS when I heard it played there.

Although the original is excellent I have to confess I’m more of a fan of the John Tejada vocal mix.  It has more of a tech house feel to it, does some very cool filtering in of the mid range which is very reminiscent of an old school mid 90′s tweaky 303 techno tune which clearly appeals to me.  I think the Tejada mix has a lot more going on despite it’s stripped down construction, and I can see it working really well on a slightly harder dancefloor.

Armada music do weird things to stop people sharing their music so here’s a link if the video link goes down

I’m also rather liking the Hooligan remix of this track too.  There’s one bit which sounds a bit out of phrase to me, but other than that, ace.

Gui Boratto – No Turning Back – Kompact – Tech House

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I’ve been listening to this track on and off for a few months, and it’s been a real grower.  On first listen I thought it to be just a decent tech house track, but as I was mixing over the last few weeks, I’ve found myself coming back to this tune more and more.

From a reasonably minimal progressive type intro the track gradually builds into a really emotive female vocal.  I think part of the reason why this track grows on you is that it has lots of subtle elements which come together to make a great tune.  It’s got a decent riff, quite a funky low range and a really quite haunting vocal.

The track is taken from Gui Boratto’s Take My Breath Away Album  which got a European release in March.  The rest of album is a mix of weird electronica and techno.  Check out Colours which is another decent track, though not one I’d DJ in a club.  There’s a particulalry apt review linked from Gui’s own site which puts it much better than I could.
