JVA Autobahn – Big & Dirty Records

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

JVA Autobahn is currently on limited release on Beatport to be released generally next week. It’s a totally amazing progressive house track. The word Autobahn had me shuddering at the thought of shitty Kraftwerk remixes, but no fear, this is ace. JVD is a Dutch chap apparently and Autobahn has been getting quite a lot of northern european DJ support.

I can only find the radio edit on Youtube so here’s samples on the Big and Dirty sit.  From the samples I think that the PM mix is the one to download.

Here’s the radio edit on youtube

Proff – Deep Orange – Anjunadeep

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

One of the simplest, tranciest and most melodic tunes of the summer, but then again that’s what Anjunadeep does.

What got me about this track and caused me to buy it was a breakdown that would heat up any dancefloor.  This track is a perfect mid-set pace changer, which throttled up a bit would work in a trance set perfectly.  At 0% pitch this tune bubbles along perfectly in a progressive set.  With a bass line which just lends itself to a club system this tune evokes summer vibes on the coldest of days.

Original mix

Vadim Soloviev remix – bugger me this is good.

Only after buying and playing the original a lot did I happen upon the B side.  I have to say that this is the thing that the nubreed are going to miss on the most.  Old vinyl junkies like me have discovered some of the best tunes in our boxes to be a B side or a double A that we woudln’t have bought at the time, but actually, a few months later, the freebie knocks the shit out of the original.

Well that’s how I feel about the Vadim Soloviev remix of Deep Orange.  Okay the breakdown isn’t quite as simple or effective in my view, but other than that, this dirtier, bassier track ticks all the boxes.  The intro to the track is melodic with a threatening hint of big beats to come, bassline kicks in at around the minute mark and it’s hold on to your hats time.

A great DJ tool of a track thanks to the intro, I’m a big fan.

16 Bit Lolitas – Calling New York – Bits and Pieces

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

A track that’s so like an Underworld track I fully expect to hear Karl Hyde shout something over the top of of it. It’s been knocking around since May getting lots of dancefloor play from the big prog DJ’s and whenever I listen to it I’m transported back to 1999. This is no bad thing, with excellent tight production, this track is completely up to date, especially with the thoroughly modern, and bang-on prog mid range, it just warms your heart on a cold autumn morning.

What really gets me tingling is the choral stab, which just reminds me of Dark Train, by Underworld.

Despite it’s simplicity don’t underestimate the love that’s gone into this track, the production is excellent, and there’s nothing in there for the sake of it, every sample, sound and tweak is there for a reason, and that’s to build atmosphere. I’ve been aware of, but never really closely followed 16 Bit Lolitas, but I’m going to watch them more closely now.

This is a simple, no nonsense record, but my god it’s good.

Way Out West – Only love – Armada Music

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

This great track from the excellent Way Out West has been out for a while now and it’s the first single on the We Love Machine Album to get a release.  The Album came out on the 5th of October and it’s yet to make the album chart though I hope it will.

I was lucky enough to see Nick Warren play this tune at The Gallery MOS, and there’s a cool video of the event too courtesy of Internet DJ.

The tune has a really great warm housey feel to it. Lovely cowbell type sounds, great string snaps and a cute vocal. I’d heard the tune several times before it really grew on me. As you’d expect from Way Out West the production’s as tight as can be and there are no un-necessary elements, everything in there adds to the track.

I think Only Love is a great mid set house or progressive candidate and it sure rocked the MOS when I heard it played there.

Although the original is excellent I have to confess I’m more of a fan of the John Tejada vocal mix.  It has more of a tech house feel to it, does some very cool filtering in of the mid range which is very reminiscent of an old school mid 90′s tweaky 303 techno tune which clearly appeals to me.  I think the Tejada mix has a lot more going on despite it’s stripped down construction, and I can see it working really well on a slightly harder dancefloor.

Armada music do weird things to stop people sharing their music so here’s a link if the video link goes down

I’m also rather liking the Hooligan remix of this track too.  There’s one bit which sounds a bit out of phrase to me, but other than that, ace.

PQM – You are sleeping – PQM Meets Luke Chabal mix – Yoshitoshi Recordings – Progressive House

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This track has been around since at least 2003 and has been picked up in DJ sets from people as diverse as Pete Tong & Hybrid and has been on a few albums, most notably GU10 from Global Underground.  Although very much a progressive track it did cr0ss-over into the house scene pretty well and enjoyed some success in the Ibiza season of 2003.

The tune features a wicked vocal depicting a bloke’s demise at the hands of a smack addicted prostitute (rare for a dance track to have a story!) The vocal is really well filtered and the track bounces along well.  As with truly good progressive tracks it hasn’t really aged much since 2003 and still sounds decent today.

For really technical, and very good, review of this track check out Progressive Sounds

Ned Shepard & Sultan aka Jiva – Timelapse & Physical – Harem Records – Progressive House

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I’d been out of the prog scene for a little while so had hardly heard of this  Ned Shepard character until I heard him on the Progressivehouse.com progcast last year and since then he’s become a bit of a hero of mine.  We’ve all done it, heard a mix and tried to buy every tune on the mix in a vain hope of being able re-create something half as good.  It turns out he and is partner in crime Sultan operated under the name Jiva, so I had heard of them before but not known it.

In fact one of my favourite tunes of the summer of 2006 was Timelapse, which featured a beautifully turned out vocal from Rula.  It’s a perfect summer house tune, blissed-out,  completely accessible to even non-dance people and would a be a perfect summer boat party or Ibiza anthem.  The intro and outro are effing long and it’s a VERY mixable tune.  As I sit here on a sunny Friday afternoon thinking of BBQ’s  banging away in my headphones and I want to go and party.

The version I wanted to link to can’t be found so here’s a half decent remix that’s got all the elements, especially the cracking vocal.

Let’s Get Physical on the other hand. samples the ulitmate 80′s workout track, featuring Olivia Newton John.  This electro house remix is excellent and really works well in a trance/progressive set, and although I’ve not heard it played out, it’s gotta rock a dancefloor or festival.

Crescendo – Are You Out There (Original Mix) – FFRR – House

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ5IQbA02C0&feature=related]

My mate Jim bought this record before any of us had decks and this tune was certainly one of the catalyists to learning to mix.
The tune opens up with a great intro.  A male vocal and building strings, give way to a female sample and sirens sound before the beat gets going.

The tune did reasonably well but I never really heard it tearing the roof off any clubs, which is a shame because it did have potential.

Dino Lenny – Cocaine 2009 – Flying

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPJ_O5-kIiM]

Alarmingly this is the second track in ten posts which makes reference to coke, however let not it’s naughty content detract from what an excellent record this is.  I first heard it on a guest mix on Digitally Imported and had to find out more.  The late 80′s version of Cocaine, is a classic piano riff, looped vocal masterpiece, the type of stuff pirate radio stations of the times went mad for.

The 09 update is a progressive house monster great driving bassline with a really warm rhythm.  The ‘cocaine’ vocal is sampled well and the tune gathers pace nice an quickly without ever overdoing the layering.   The use of the documentary style vocal reminded me of the kind of mid 90′s trance you’d hear on albums like Northern Exposure, and the whole track has a slightly late 90′s feel about it.  In terms of breakdown the orchestrals build really nicely into a hybrid-esque airy crescendo and the under-stated beat kicks back in.   Excellent tune and definitely one I’ll be mixing next time I’ve been on a downloading spree.

Dino Lenny’s been all over the whole scene for years, but I’ve owned surprisingly few of his tracks.  The other track I’d heard from Dino Lenny for quite some time is the Marco V remix of Feels Like Home which features the great sample from Felix’s ‘Don’t you want my love‘- as this track’s been remixed and sampled a million times I’ve linked to my favourite version which is Red Jerry Holiday Remix,  the track was originally released in in 1989 by Jomanda

Sia – The Girl You Lost to Cocaine – Sander Van Doorn Remix – Doorn Records

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Anybody who’s been near SW4 or any outdoor events over the last couple of years has  gotta be a fan of Sander Van Doorn.

His remix of Sia The Girl You Lost To Cocaine is amazing it came out on his own labelThe intro builds fantastically well from a high hat, to a great little vocal sample and when the slighlty off beat base line kicks in the tune really goes off.

Here’s the SVD remix

This track has attracted remix interest from some pretty odd sources, and this trance one is pretty grim.  I particularly like the male ‘go’ vocal just after the 1 min mark, ha!

Here’s the original Sia track
