Jody Wisternoff Intensified December

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

I know I keep posting up links to Jody Wisternoff mixes, but it’s because they’re so darn good.

Intensified December is particularly awesome. I love the way Jody blends deep, progressive, tech house, and even a bit of techno so well.

Frisky Radio is a decent web-based radio station and annoyingly for them, their content turns up all over the net. In this case I think that the fact Jody Wisternoff himself has posted this into his soundcloud profile makes it okay to repost.

Currently listening to Dancesaurus (Edmund Conway) Progressive House Mix

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The Daily Telegraph is renowned as the voice of right wing England so it’s the least likely place in the world to find good dance music content. Or so I thought.

One of their music bloggers Dancesaurus has done a great job of defining exactly what progressive house actually is, producing a decent showcase mix and even giving comparisons between trance remixes and progressive house remixes of particular tracks. Loving his work.

The mix itself is pretty decent, and if you were to ask me to pull out 12 tunes to illustrate progressive house as a genre then I’d choose something similar.

Currently listening to – KrOOton – Autumn Lights

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Originally hailing from South Africa, Kr00ton is a throughly affable chap.  I first ran into him in the Hard Trance scene in London about four years ago.  What I really like about this bloke is that he’s not a glory hunter.  His mixing is excellent and he could have played all over the place, but instead, he just plays now and again at smaller promotions.  I’ve seen him a couple of times and seem to remember him rocking the place.

Like many people who used to knock around the hard trance scene, Kr00ton’s got into Psy Trance, now let’s not hold that against him, he used to like hard house after all.  That said he’s a jack of all trades and can turn his hand to trance and prog just as well has he can bang out the 180BPM mixes.

Here’s Autumn Lights, enjoy.

There are lots of great tracks on this mix and I have to confess to buying a few of them as soon as I heard it.  Izu, Snow Drift; Paul Keeley – Doormatica; and, Oceanlab – Lonely Girl, are all excellent tunes.

And the tracklist

1. Izu – Snow Drift
2. Paul Keeley – Doormatica
3. Ashley Wallbridge – Spiritual Return
4. Arno Cost – Cyan
5. Dark Providers – Nasicilia (Ben Preston)

7. Dinka – Canonball (Claes Rosen)
8. Romi – Soothsayer (Michael De Kooker)
9. Rishab & Prayag – Starlight (Lost Stories)
10. Andy Moor & Ashley Wallbridge – Faces (Ben Gold)
11. Andre Glensk – Monday Reflections
12. Ferry Corsten – We Belong
13. Solar Movement – Eclipse (Mat Zo)

currently listening to – Hybrid – Frisky Radio

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

This great DJ mix by Hybrid has never been too far from the top of my iphone playlist for literally the last six months. I last listened to it on a plane trip to Spain and it left me feeling thoroughly smiley and in the mood for a break.

There’s no track list on the Hybridized site, so you’re buggered if you want any of the tracks. The second tune is ace, really like it; and the funny up-and-down female vocal in the third track is really cool.

Hybrid are my favourite act that I’ve never seen. I’ve been at festivals where they’ve played, and, usually in the car home, have kicked myself for missing them, but they’re totally on the MUST SEE list.

Here’s the Hybridized link

For once, there’s literally no point posting a track list, they’re all un-released, just enjoy it.

Really great progressive house mix and perfect for summer.  I’m a really big fan of the first track, by Glenn Morrison.

Currently listening to – Sander Van Doorn – Essential Mix

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Not posted for ages due to being a busy boy, and there’s only a few days left to check this out on the Iplayer, but it’s excellent.
Sander Van Doorn studio recroded essential mix.  I’m a real Sander Van Doorn fan.  I think partly because he’s so hard to categorise, which makes him really accessible.  He always tears into things like SW4  and appeals to the trance heads as much as the house crowd.   His sets are always a great mix of hands-in-the-air euphoria and funky dance-able beats, cool vocals and very little cheese.

This is another set thanks to the excellent

(click the logo for the link)

As mentioned in a previous post I saw Nick Warren playing at Ministry of Sound on Saturday night for the Renaissance party. I thought his set was excellent, though not quite as good as this mix.  For me the sets of the evening were in the bar from Tom Middleton & DJ Freak.  Despite being on the guest list it still took 45 mins to get into the venue.  But once in I thought the club was just the right amount of busy, and although not exactly friendly the crowd was okay.

Anyway enough of that here’s the track listing to what is a great mix

Currently Listening to – Jody Wisternoff – Intensified (April) – Progressive House Mix

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Jody Wisternoff is one half of epic dance duo Way Out West, the other half of which Nick Warren is playing for Renaissance at MOS on Saturday night.

I think Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren embody a trance & progressive house sound that’s never really gone away but has been in and out of fashion.  Unlike the Goa sound of people like Oakenfol, which exploded, peaked and faded away’ the progressive scene has bubbled along rather than exploded and in my view was always more of a southern sound while we northeners banged away to hard house.  Renaisseance has always been one of the premier nights in the UK but has never been particlarly shouty about it.  It’s just knocked out great progressive house nights for years.  Though looking at the Deadmau5 and recent AVB offerings I do think that this sound will be the sound of the summer (again) in 2009.

Intensified is Jody’s regular show for Frisky Radio

You can also check out Way Out there which is Jody’s monthly mix slot on Proton Radio

This month’s is a vocal and quite housey mix which is perfect for the commute in the Spring weather and is very much putting me in the mood for a long weekend.

Download it via the awesome

Here’s the tracklist

01. The Diogenes Club – Do You Know How To Feel It
02. Oliver Koletzki – Since You Are Gone (Daso Remix)
03. Danny Howells – The Shining (Original Mix)
04. Junior Boys – Hazel (Ewan Pearson’s House Mix)
05. Dana Bergquist & Peder G – Loveshine (Jody Wisternoff Remix)
06. Vincenzo – Shonen Jump
07. The Chemical Brothers – Block Rockin’ Beats (Thomas Sagstad Remix)
08. BT – Flaming June (ID Remix)
09. Jerome Sydenham & Hideo Kobayashi Present Nagano Kitchen – Destination Nagano (Joris Voorn Remix)

As an artist & remixer Jody is accomplished and has a helluva track list.  His remix of Chymera Parelo is excellent.

Rick is a top bloke and a great DJ.  In fact I bought my current mixer off him, in a cash transaction in a Brixton boozer, looked well dodgy.

This mix is his first Ableton attempt and it’s pretty good.

Particularly like the Super 8 & Tab track Elecktra on Anjunabeats (pretty much the best trance label about at the moment)
